Outstanding Achievements

Congratulations! Taipei City’s bridge maintenance received the 18th Golden Road Award for Road Maintenance Category

Taipei City’s outstanding bridge maintenance performance has earned the “Golden Road Award” from the Ministry of Transportation and Communications (MOTC). The MOTC has been conducting evaluations on the management and execution of bridge maintenance of the county and city governments since 2004, and awards the “Golden Road Awards”, equivalent to the Oscars in Taiwan’s transportation sector, to those with outstanding management. Deputy Secretary-General Hsueh Chun-Ming received the award on behalf of Taipei City Government on Sep. 1, 2017.

There are 302 bridges under the administration of Taipei City, including 34 river-spanning bridges, 31 land bridges for vehicles and 237 general bridges. According to the MOTC’s latest “Road Maintenance Specifications”, the New Construction Office, Public Works Department of Taipei City Government (NCO) has delegated professional engineering consultancy companies to provide each bridge with 1 safety inspection every 2 years in principle. For more important bridges, the inspection frequency is increased to once a year. In addition, routine inspection and maintenance are conducted based on the age of the bridges: for bridges less than 15 years old (including elevated roads), inspection is conducted once every 7 days; for bridges of 15 to 30 years, once every 3 days; and for bridges above 30 years, every day.

If the inspection discovers any defects that have immediate effects on the passage of motorists and pedestrians, repair work has to be carried out immediately to ensure traffic safety for road users. Before and after every typhoon attack, flood control inspections are conducted on the river-spanning bridges; and after earthquakes above magnitude 3, speedy safety inspections are conducted.

To meet the requirements of the latest national seismic specifications, Taipei City Government has been conducting progressive seismic retrofitting works since 2014. Currently, seismic retrofitting for 19 river-spanning bridges and land bridges for vehicles has been completed, with the remaining 20 undergoing retrofitting work. For steel bridges, Taipei City Government has scheduled anti-corrosion and improvement works based on the inspection results, so as to ensure the safe service life of the steel bridges.

The effort of Taipei City Government’s bridge maintenance team has won it the Golden Road Award, in recognition of their work. In the future, Taipei City Government shall continue to invest resources in maintaining the City’s bridges, and ensuring the passage safety of the bridges with a professional and positive attitude.
