Demolition of Zhongxiao Bridge ramps and improvement of surrounding roads gave the North Gate its old glory back

1.Origin:
The Zhongxiao bridge link (then Zhongxiao West Road viaduct) was built in 1982 to resolve the traffic congestion at the old railroad crossing before the railroad went underground. Now that the railroad goes underground, the purpose that the link serves for disappears and the link itself becomes an eyesore for the urban landscapes and the historic significance of the North Gate. The demolition of the link and the improvement of surrounding roads were expected to improve urban landscapes, create open spaces and make the significant North Gate resurface.

The link was scheduled for demolition during the 8-day holidays of Chinese New Year as this generated minimal impact to the already congesting traffic. For the section between Zhonghua Road and Yenping North Road that was closest to North Gate, chainsaws and disc saws were brought in to cut the bridge decks and piers into manageable pieces. This helped protect the monumental gate from damage, and on the other hand, accelerated the process and minimized noises. Also the pieces of bridge were removed from the site for further processing to minimize dusts from creating air pollution.

The main girders of the Zhongxiao Bridge ramp were installed in the early morning on Jul 28 2016 thanks to the persistent efforts of the construction team. What followed was the bridge deck installation, which creates two more lanes on the bridge to and from Sanchong, thus relieving the traffic. In addition, the profile improvement of Zhongxiao West Road and the adjustment of the vehicle paths provide more comfortable and safe driving space for citizens.

2.Project overview: the project started on Jan 6 2016 and was completed on Nov 30 2016.
(一)Surface road improvement, including the improvement of subgrade and road surface along the original link and the piers.

Permanent road profiling includes the section between Xining North Road and Tacheng Street, including the center medians, street lamps, signs and signals; temporary road profiling includes the section between Tacheng Street and Chongqing North Road, including the recession of North Gate Plaza and channelization islands, street lamps, signs and signals.
(二)Widening of Zhongxiao Bridge link west of Xining North Road (bridge piers and foundations, superstructure and road embankment)
(三)Subsequent expansion: demolition of Jiao 6 Guoguang West Station and construction of bus turnouts, bus stops, booths and bulletin boards.

3.Construction team:
(一)Led by: New Construction Office, Public Works Department, Taipei City Government
(二)Designed by: Union Professional Group of Architecture
(三)Construction supervisor: Union Professional Group of Architecture
(四)General contractor: Hwang Chang General Contractor Co., Ltd.

4.Expected benefits:
(一)Surface roads will be restored and the complicated vehicle paths improved once the bridge link is gone. It is expected to see smooth traffic flow and minimize traffic conflicts, as to improve driving safety and create a friendly city featuring a people-oriented public environment.
(二)The North Gate is the only old city gate that retains its original look in Taipei. It has its unique place in the history of Taipei. With the link gone, the North Gate will have its old glory back and the urban landscaping improved. There is a plan to expand the North Gate Plaza and pedestrian space for direct pedestrian paths to connect the historic sites and Metro stations.
(三)It kick-starts the Westside Gateway Project to build the gateway to Taiwan centered on Taipei Main Station and surrounding areas.
