Countdown to Taipei 2017 Universiade Sees Major Progress in Stadium Construction: Taipei Stadium and Shih-hsin Hall will be Completed as Designed, On-Schedule by the End of March
The "Taipei 2017 Universiade Stadium Renovation - Taipei Stadium (Warming Up Field) and Shih-hsin Hall of University of Taipei (Tianmu Campus)", with which Taipei City’s New Construction Office is entrusted, began on September 25, 2016 and was scheduled for completion in 180 calendar days, on March 29, 2017.
Taipei Stadium is the venue for the opening and closing ceremonies of Taipei 2017 Universiade, and the main site and warming up field of track competitions, while the Shih-hsin Hall is the official diving venue. The renovation for both stadiums is extremely important to the Universiade event held by Taipei City. This construction, mainly in accordance with the "2017 Taipei Summer Universiade", includes lighting improvement, competition and auxiliary space renovation, existing sports and auxiliary facilities renovation, etc. The renovation of Taipei Stadium includes additional straight tracks, track re-pavement, take-off board renewal, runway adjustment, the landing sand pit, the shot put field, etc. The renovation of the warming up field includes the re-pavement of the existing synthetic rubber tracks, the conversion of the northern natural lawn into a synthetic rubber coating, removal of the existing javelin field and discus field, night-time lighting renovation, etc. The renovation of Shih-hsin Hall includes the diving pool renovation, interior space adjustment according to the sports venue requirements, the additional training site for diving dryland workout on the 3rd floor, and 2 elevators to meet the requirements of a friendly, barrier-free environment. The completion of the renovation project will not only satisfy all the official competition requirements of the Universiade games, but also continue to provide the public with an outstanding and comfortable sports venue after the event.
The New Construction Office explained that the renovations of Taipei Stadium and Warming-Up Field both involve track removal and re-pavement, whose progress is heavily affected by the weather. The contractors were asked to speed up the work whenever the weather was good, which resulted in the construction progress being ahead of schedule on both fields; even the diving venue, Shih-hsin Hall, will be completed as designed and on schedule by the end of March.
Fortune Construction Co. Ltd. is in charge of the construction of this project, while Wanbang Architects are in charge of the design and construction supervision. The project is planned for completion by March 29, 2017, and receive the International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF) Road Race Gold Label before May. The completed venues will be turned over to Taipei City’s Department of Sports for a series of trial races to verify whether the quality of the facilities complies with international competition requirements, and to get ready for the Universiade on August 19, 2017.
