Incessant Accolades: Taipei City’s New Construction Office Wins the Public Construction Excellence Award

The New Construction Office, Public Works Department, Taipei City Government was awarded the “2017 Taipei City Government Public Construction Excellence Award” for its “Demolition of the Approach Bridge to Zhongxiao Bridge and Surrounding Plane Road Improvement Works” and the “Songjiang Road Pavement Expansion Construction (Second Tender)”.

Before the “2017 Taipei City Government Public Works Excellence Award”, the “New Construction Office, Public Works Department, Taipei City Government” had already been awarded the “2017 Quality Award in FIABCI-Taiwan Real Estate Excellence Awards”, the“2016 Golden Safety Award of the Ministry of Labor”, the “The 16th Public Construction Golden Quality Excellence Award”, etc. In order to reduce the impact on the traffic, the construction started previously during Chinese New Year, which required removal 30 bridge piers along a total of 750 meters in length, and a total of 8,554 cubic meters of concrete. It reduced the planned bridge removal from two months to eight days, which ultimately required merely six days due to the smooth progress. Additionally, the city government held over 52 coordination meetings with all the relevant departments and offices to ensure protection for the Level One Ancient Monument, while taking the HSR, TRA and MRT tunnel underneath the construction site into consideration. The ancient monument was undamaged and no occupational safety issues arose due to the excellent quality control before and after the construction. The “North Gate” historical monument was revived and presented a new look after 39 years of being blocked by the Zhongxiao Bridge, which is sure to remind the public of the City’s heritage, and create the image of Taipei as the gateway to the nation.

In order to avoid traffic impact by full-segment simultaneous construction of the “Songjiang Road Pavement Expansion Construction (Second Tender)”, Taipei City Mayor Ko Wen-Je gave his instruction to take the “sooner begun, sooner done” approach on the construction, which adjusted the construction method and reduced the construction period. Canopy rain covered areas at the construction site were meant to avoid climate and rain impacting the work, and a 24-hour real-time traffic monitoring system was installed to track the construction and traffic conditions. The bicycle path on Songjiang Road combined the concepts of the “Sponge City” and “Humanistic Environment”. In addition to the separation of pedestrians and cyclists, the design incorporated permeability to water for proper permeable surfaces, to increase the City’s permeable surface area, thereby reducing the drainage required by the sewerage, as well as the urban heat island effect, increasing the people’s willingness to ride a bike, and building a green transport environment and life in Taipei City.
